I was halfway through my first adult novel when inspiration came to me
in the form of a gecko. I watched it climb the wall and told my husband
to leave it as it would feed on the bugs in the house. Unfortunately
my cat had other ideas!
Geckos are a great role model for children. They are said to be courageous creatures, brave, intrepid and adventurous.
Lots
of people regard the gecko as the guardian of the home. No one knows
the history of this tradition. In the Iberian peninsular in fact as a
good luck symbol they are more popular than the clover or the horseshoe
in Northern Europe. In many gardens you will find ceramics featuring
this little creature.
The gecko is said to be blessed with both a passion for good life and the good fortune to enjoy
it. Supposedly this builds a fire in humans by prioritising self care
and connection. In reality they eat a lot of the bugs that humans
prefer not to have in their homes. A natural hoover.
As I
watched that little gecko in my house, I knew I had to write a book
about it. For children to learn about a creature that is courageous,
brave and adventurous that must lead to a good outcome. For me I hope
it brings good luck to mine.
